Kemenche player Elman Badalov

Kemenche player Elman Karim oghlu Badalov was born on June 4, 1929 in Aghdam. In “Encyclopedia of Azerbaijani mugham” the place of his birth is indicated as Aghdam region. Elman Badalov’s parents were natives of Shusha.

In his childhood Elman was a member of Pioneers’ House of Aghdam where he was learning to play the tar and to draw. However, he decided to dedicate himself to playing the kemenche.

Elman Badalov graduated from pedagogical technical school. Then he entered the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Aghdam State Pedagogical Institute in 1943. Also, he taught to play the kemenche at the music school of Aghdam.

When he was a student, Elman Badalov was playing the kemenche in the orchestra of Aghdam State Drama Theater. In 1944-1945 and in 1947 Elman Badalov participated in Republic Olympiads. In 1957 Badalov was a laureate of the 2nd Azerbaijan Youth Festival as a tar player.

In 1951-1957 Elman Badalov worked at the position of a mathematics teacher in various schools of Karabakh.

In 1957-1961 Elman Badalov studied at Baku Musical College under National Conservatory of Azerbaijan. In 1980 he graduated from Baku Music Academy named after Uzeyir Hajibeyov.

From 1958 until his death, Elman Badalov was the soloist and concertmaster of the band of kemenche players of Azerbaijan Television and Radio Orchestra of Folk Instruments (current Azerbaijan State Orchestra of Folk Instruments named after Said Rustamov).

Elman Badalov performed in the mugham trio and participated in the international festivals held in Japan, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and other countries.

In 1982 Elman Badalov was awarded with the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijani SSR.

Badalov taught in Children’s Musical School № 6 named after Ahmed Bakikhanov and the Secondary Music School named after Bulbul in Baku as well as Baku Music Academy named after Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Among his students were such Azerbaijani kemenche players as Adalat Vazirov, Aghajabrayil Abbasaliyev and others.

In 1983 Elman Badalov took part in the International Mugham Symposium held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan).
