On October 17, 2020, during the Second Karabakh War (September 27, 2020 – November 10, 2020) the Azerbaijani army liberated the city of Fuzuli from the Armenian occupation. This Azerbaijani city became the second to be liberated from the occupation after Jabrayil. Qarabag.com has prepared the material on the history of the administrative division of the city of Fuzuli from the XIX century to the present.
The administrative center of the Fuzuli district, the city of Fuzuli (formerly Karabulag, Karyagino, Sardar) is located in the south-eastern part of Azerbaijan, on the right bank of the Condelenchai river.

Fuzuli was founded in 1827.

In 1855, Fuzuli was referred to as the Molokan village of Karabulag as part of the Varandin part of Shusha Uyezd.

In 1868, Shusha Uyezd (including Karabulag) became part of the Elizavetpol province.
In 1873, Karabulag was included in the newly formed Jabrayil Uyezd.

In 1905, the administrative center of Jabrayil Uyezd was moved from the village of Jabrayil to the village of Karabulag. Jabrayil Uyezd was renamed to Karyaginskiy Uyezd, and the village of Karabulag was renamed to Karyagino in honor of the Russian colonel Pavel Karyagin.

During the years of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920) Karyagino was the administrative center of Jabrayil Uyezd of Ganja province.

In 1919-1920, Karyagino became part of the Karabakh Governorate-General.

In 1923, the administrative center of Jabrayil Uyezd was moved from Karyagino to Jabrayil. Consequently, Karyagino lost the status of the administrative center of Uyezd.

In 1926, Karyagino was again designated as the administrative center of Jabrayil Uyezd.

In 1929, Karyagino was renamed to Sardar in honor of the Azerbaijani Bolshevik Buniat Sardarov.

On August 8, 1930, the Karyaginskiy district was created with the center of the previously renamed Karyagino city.

On April 2, 1959, the city was renamed from Karyagino to Fuzuli in honor of the Azerbaijani poet Mohammed Fuzuli.

After attaining independence of Azerbaijan, in 1991, the Fuzuli district retained its administrative and territorial status with its centre in Fuzuli city.
In August 1993, Fuzuli was occupied by Armenian armed formations.
