Poets and Poetesses born in Shusha

Qarabag.com continues publishing materials about outstanding natives of Shusha and presents a list of famous Azerbaijani poets and poetesses, who have left a rich artistic heritage in the national literature.

1.	Hasan Bek Hadi	1835 – 1900	Hasan Bek Garabaghi wrote poems under the alias of Hadi. His literary heritage consists mainly of ghazals as well as epigrams and libels written in the classical style.
2.	Gamer Beiim Shade	1881 – 1933	The Institute of Manuscripts of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Azerbaijan holds two copies of her manuscripts from 1918: “Agan Jany” ghazal and “Flood of suffering” play.
3.	Janizade Abdullah Pasha	1782-1840	He had a unique poetic gift. He possessed samples of both classical poetry and lyrical, folkloric, and even satirical poetry. But he was especially renowned for his epigrams.
4.	Gasim Bek Zakir	1784 – 1857	Gasim Bek Zakir was an outstanding representative of critical realism in Azerbaijani literature of the first half of the 19th century, propagandizing the necessity of cultural rapprochement of Azerbaijanis with Russians and Transcaucasian nations.
5.	Ibrahim Bek Azer	1836 – 1885	He wrote poems under the alias of Azer. Ibrahim Bek Azer wrote poems in classical style (poetic size of aruz) in Azerbaijani and Persian languages.
6.	Memo Bek Memai	1849 – 1918	Memo Bek Memai was one of the most active members of the Mejlishi Uns, an association of poets headed by famous female poet Khurshudbanu Natavan.
7.	Mirza Alesker Novres	1836 – 1912	Mirza Alesker Novres was an active member of the Mejlishi Uns, an association of poets headed by famous female poet Khurshudbanu Natavan.
8.	Mirza Beybaba Fena	1787 – 1867	Mirza Beybaba wrote poems under the alias of Fena. He compiled a collection of poets from Shusha and rewritten several books.
9.	Mirza Hussain Bek Salar	1824 – 1876	He was one of the best masters of the merciier poetry genre (lament).
10.	Mirza Ibrahim Bek Syaba	1801 – 1877	People called him “Mirza” because of his education and comprehensive knowledge. Under his alias of “Syaba” he wrote many touching poems.
11.	Mirza Muhammad Katib	1827 – 1889	Mirza Muhammad bek has favoured both the classical genre and the style of Ashug poems in his art.
12.	Mirza Muhammad Kerim Bek Kebirli	1785 – 1840	He participated in the design of the cathedral mosque under construction in Shusha, created several handwritten books of the Koran with great skill, and taught.
13.	Mirza Rahim Fena	1841 – 1931	Mirza Rahim Fena was one of the initiators of the literary community Majlisi Uns (“Meeting of Friends”), led by by famous female poet Khurshudbanu Natavan.
14.	Mirza Sadig Piran	1822 – 1893	He wrote poems under the alias Piran. He often took part in meetings of the literary club Majlisi Uns (“Friendship Society“), headed by the famous female poet Khurshudbanu Natavan.
15.	Molla Zeynalabdin Sageri	1791 – 1854	Molla Zeynalabdin Sageri is the author of two divans (a collection of poems) in Azerbaijani and Farsi, and his ghazals, ghasids, rubai and other poems exceed one thousand.
16.	Muhammad Ali Bek Mehfi	1832 – 1892	Muhammad Ali Bek Baharli is also considered to be the author of the historical piece “Ekhvalati Garabagh”. In his work, the author pays more attention to architectural monuments, historical personalities, traditions and customs, and the ethnography of Karabakh.
17.	Muhammad Bek Ashug	1800 – 1861	He is one of the oldest Karabakh poets who created in the 19th century. He wrote under the alias of Ashug.
18.	Navvab Mir Mohsun	1833 – 1918	He wrote poetry and published books in the printing house opened by him. Among his works, “Tazkirei-Navvab” is of great interest, which contains detailed information about the life and work of more than a hundred 19th century Karabakh poets.
19.	Najaf Kuli Bek Shayda	1858 – 1936	Decades after the poet’s death, in 2006 the Manuscripts Institute of ANAS prepared and published a book of poems by Najaf Kuli Bek Shayda.
20.	Rustambekov Iskander Bek	1845 – 1918	Throughout his life, he has stood on educational positions, advocated for science, culture, and education, and really often spoke to the people of Shusha and Agdam, calling on them to learn and read.
21.	Shakir Baba Bek	1770 – 1844	Baba Bek’s satire exposed the greedy beks, causing of obscurantism and illiteracy among clergy, corrupt officials, cruel and rude commandants, officers and civil servants.
